As members of Group 33, working on the UBC MDS Helper, we are committed to building a collaborative, inclusive, and respectful environment. We welcome contributions from all team members regardless of background, identity, perspective, or experience.

We believe that diversity strengthens teamwork and leads to more ethical and impactful data science outcomes.

Our goal is to ensure every member of this project feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute.

Expected Behaviour

All project members are expected to:

  • Treat all team members with respect, empathy, and professionalism

  • Use inclusive, non-judgmental, and non-discriminatory language

  • Participate actively and communicate clearly

  • Collaborate constructively, especially when giving or receiving feedback

  • Honour project deadlines and communicate early when any challenges arise

  • Maintain data integrity, confidentiality, and ethical standards

  • Ask questions openly and support one another’s learning

  • Take responsibility for their contributions to the project

Unacceptable Behaviour

The following behaviours will not be tolerated in this project:

  • Harassment, bullying, or intimidation in any form

  • Discriminatory comments, jokes, or actions

  • Personal attacks, name-calling, or unprofessional tone

  • Dismissing or belittling others’ ideas

  • Sharing confidential or sensitive information (including dataset privacy violations)

  • Deliberately undermining project progress

  • Inappropriate or offensive communication

  • Any behaviour that causes another team member to feel unsafe, excluded, or disrespected

Reporting a Concern

If you experience or observe a violation of this Code of Conduct, please report it to:

  • Any Group 33 member you feel comfortable approaching

  • The course TA or instructor if the issue cannot be resolved within the group

Reports should include:

  • A description of the behaviour

  • When and where it occurred

  • Individuals involved

  • Any evidence (screenshots, messages, etc.)

All reports will be reviewed confidentially and with sensitivity.

Fostering a Positive and Supportive Team Culture

At Group 33, we want everyone to feel excited, motivated, and comfortable contributing. To create a supportive environment, we encourage:

  • Celebrating contributions: Recognize and appreciate the effort of every team member, no matter how small.

  • Encouraging curiosity: Ask questions freely — there are no “silly” questions when learning together.

  • Sharing knowledge: Help each other understand concepts, code, and data analysis techniques.

  • Being patient and kind: Everyone works at their own pace; respect each other’s learning journey.
